The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken serious note of the alleged racially motivated killing of a student from Tripura in Dehradun, issuing formal notices to the District Magistrate and the Senior Superintendent of Police. Calling the incident a grave violation of human rights, the commission has directed local authorities to conduct a thorough and time-bound investigation and submit an action taken report within seven days.

The killing has sparked nationwide outrage, with political leaders, student bodies, and civil society groups demanding strict action and stronger measures to curb hate crimes against people from India’s northeastern states. Candlelight marches and protests were held in Dehradun, as demonstrators questioned the safety of students and migrants from the Northeast in other parts of the country. The case has once again brought focus on racial discrimination, prejudice, and accountability of law enforcement, with the NHRC’s intervention seen as a crucial step toward justice
