After 168 Years, Control Questioned: President Sends Back Madras University Bill

President Droupadi Murmu has returned the University of Madras Amendment Bill, which was meant to give the Tamil Nadu government the power to appoint the Vice Chancellor of the university.

The University of Madras is 168 years old and is one of India’s oldest universities. The Bill was passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly in April 2022 and sent for the President’s approval. The university has been running without a Vice Chancellor for more than two years, which is why the State government wanted this change.
Since the Bill has been sent back, the issue of who will appoint the Vice Chancellor remains unresolved, and the future administration of the historic university is still uncertain.
