Tension in Area After Youth Killed During Wedding Procession

Protest Held With Body

Tension prevailed in Balighai village under the jurisdiction of Polasara police station of Ganjam district after the killing incident which took place in the village on Saturday. Akash Jena became the victim of the murder case and he passed away in hospital on Sunday.

On bringing the body back home after a post-mortem examination, anger was observed among the villagers. Unable to bear such an incident, thousands of people started protesting against the accused.

They placed the body of the victim on the roadside of Polasara-Buguda highway and started demonstrating in demand of arresting all the suspects and capital punishment for the prime suspect.

Sujit Kumar Nayak, SDPO of Purushottampur block accompanied by the police party came to the spot and tried to convince the angry crowd. The crowd continued their protest until midnight.

However, the situation came under control after the intervention of local leaders and a promise from the police. Financial help amounting to ₹1.5 lakh was promised to the family of the deceased by Red Cross and Polasara police.

After nearly four hours of agitation, the villagers ended their agitation. The funeral ceremony of Akash Jena was held at the village cemetery premises. Police have detained four persons so far, and further investigation is underway, said IIC Kaushik Majhi.
