Leaders’ Absence at Jharsuguda Event Sparks Political Row

A serious controversy has arisen over the non-appearance of leaders and officials in a government function in Jharsuguda.

While the occasion was supposed to be celebrated as a mark of International Workers’ Day, MLA Tankadhar Tripathy publicly made his discontent known with regard to what he called the “trend of sending representatives to attend functions.”

Whereas on an occasion like this when workers’ rights and issues and development of industries would be discussed, allegations were made that representatives elected to power tend to send their representatives instead of personally attending government functions. Referring to the situation in the strong terms, the MLA remarked that if such a situation prevails further, even assemblies and Parliament could function in such a manner.

Such a scenario came into picture when the Subhadra Mela at the BTM ground in Jharsuguda took place. While MLA Tankadhar Tripathy alone was present, the others who participated were the representatives of Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari and MP Pradeep Purohit. On April 28, the Subhadra Shakti Mela was inaugurated at the Duladuli ground, which was witnessed by a huge gathering to watch the performance of Sambalpuri singer Umakant Barik. But both the minister and MP did not participate and had sent their representatives instead.

As per speculations, MLA Tankadhar Tripathy tried to target both the minister and MP. While speaking he pointed out that these kind of practices tend to bring down the prestige of government functions. He emphasized the need for leaders to be grounded to the people rather than staying in an air-conditioned room.

Lack of responsible people on such a crucial day has become a source of concern. After the statement from the MLA, there has been increased political talk in the district regarding the importance of presence of leaders at government events.

Time will tell what happens next and how other leaders react to the situation.
