Big Boost for Bullet Train Project: First Mountain Tunnel Completed in Maharashtra

India’s bullet train project achieved a major milestone with the completion of its first mountain tunnel in Palghar district, Maharashtra. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw virtually marked the breakthrough of the 1.5-km-long Mountain Tunnel-5, which lies between Virar and Boisar stations on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train route.
The minister said that with this tunnel completed, the entire stretch from Thane to Ahmedabad is now clear, and only the Mumbai–Thane undersea tunnel remains a challenge. The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is 508 km long and will allow trains to run at 320 kmph, reducing travel time to just over 2 hours. Vaishnaw also said India is expected to get its first bullet train by August 15, 2027, starting in phases from Gujarat before reaching Mumbai
